Cocoa is a gorgeous city located in Brevard County off the Atlantic Coast of Florida. Cocoa was originally settled by fishermen in 1860, and while the origins of the town’s name remain unknown, there are plenty of theories floating about. A popular one includes one of Captain R.C. May suggesting the name of the town in honor of the area’s association with the cocoa plant. Another popular theory suggests that the name was adopted by sailors who, when traveling along the Indian River, would be served hot cocoa by an elderly woman whenever they passed through.

About a century later, the town of Cocoa experienced a boom to the local economy due to the Space Industry and continues to do so to this day. Cocoa is home to a number of historical sites, including the Florida Historical Library and the Porcher House, as well as a number of scientific sites.

Residents enjoy the area’s year-round sunny weather and take advantage of the area’s many recreational opportunities alongside the Atlantic Coastline and Indian River. In fact, many surfers have prospered in Cocoa—including National Surfing Champion, Kelly Slater. Fishing, boating, and of course, surfing are all popular outdoor sports in Cocoa.
